I suspect this is an attack and is not legitimate. I've seen several reports of this in the past few days. But the entire experience was very frustrating and not a little enraging - it's a very aggressive case of forced obsolescence on MS's part that crosses the line in my opinion.

I did ultimately solve the issue by purchasing new Office software since I was overdue for an upgrade and as a professional writer needed access asap to all my Word docs. An MS help agent suggested that but we ultimately couldn't find O365 installed anywhere on my computer to begin with so there was nothing to un-install. I've downloaded that too and plan to copy all my old Word docs into it so I'm not dependent on Microsoft going forward.
